Prest Motel Repositions with Tradition

Pinnacle shaped Prest Motel located on airport road, Benin City, has repositioned to treat their esteemed guests better, our investigation reveals. According to Mike Agetua, club manager, who was reacting to inquiries, last week Friday in his official residence inside the motel, regarding the resting of some of their activities. He said top of the bill is the Thursday Mapoka jam. "In fact we were usually over stretched on such days when these Congolese come calling.

Specifically, to make our weekend a special treat, we try to spice them up with notable guest artists from all over the country. That again is our little way of promoting music and musicians in this country

Police, at explosion site, warn against touching of strange object

By Yinka Aderibigbe and Alex Olise,Lagos

ANTI-BALLISTIC experts dispatched to the last Sunday's explosion site at Idumagbo Avenue, Lagos have warned residents against the touching of strange objects within the vicinity, although some of the displaced victims have been relocated to Adeniji Adele Housing Estate and the City Hall, both on the metropolis.

The warning given yesterday by the Commandant of the Police Bomb Disposal Unit, Mr. Samuel Balogun, came against the backdrop of residents moving around the explosion site apparently unmindful of the danger posed by their environment.

The first phase of the police investigation is yet to yield any clue to the cause of the explosion, which rocked four buildings, including three new generation banks early on Sunday morning.

However, during yesterday's rescue operation, which was personally directed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Young Arebamen, a fresh decomposing body believed to be that of a middle-aged man was recovered.

The latest recovery brought to 24 the number of victims, who died since the explosion occurred over 72 hours ago.

A visit by The Guardian to the Lagos Island General Hospital showed that 16 patients were in critical condition.

"If urgent step is not taken, we may record more deaths," said an official who claimed anonymity.

To avert possible loss of more lives, the hospital's management has called for blood donations by volunteers.

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has observed that the recurring explosions in the country were bad signals for the nation's democracy.

The religious body, therefore, called for "full scale investigation into the latest explosion where no less than 25 persons were dispatched to their graves on Sunday.

The Chairman of the CAN, Lagos chapter, Rev. Monsignor Bernard Ayodele Okodua gave the call on Tuesday at the Hoarse Memorial Methodist Church Yaba, Lagos, while briefing journalists on the group's Inter-Denominational Divine Service (IDDS) slated for this Sunday at the Mainbowl of the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Okodua, who expressed deep worries over the development, said government needed to show more determination at unravelling the mystery behind the explosion targeted at civilian areas in Lagos State.

"These times are strange to us. Never in our history did we witness bomb blasts in our society. Certainly, Idumagbo is a business district, it is a residential area and when bombs and other related items are found in such areas, especially few months to general elections, then there's real cause to fear," Okodua said.

He expressed the sympathy of the Christian organisation to the families of victims.

His colleague and secretary, Bishop George Amun said a special offering would be taken at the one-day prayer fiesta coming on Sunday to assist victims of the disaster.

Earlier, Chairman of the IDDS organising committee, Dr. Adefunmilayo Akitoye Braimo said the event, which offered Christians an opportunity to pray for divine intervention over personal and national problems, is another opportunity to make amends.

She called for a minute's silence in honour of the victims, who lost their lives in the Idumagbo incident, praying that such a tragic event never happen again.

In Remembrance of a Legend, Alhaji, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto

By Magaji Galadima

I think, in the present world, full of hatred, bitterness, cruelty, racial discrimination, communal tensions, inequities, human degradation and erosion of values, The first and only premier of Northern Nigeria Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sakkwato (Gamji henceforth) is more relevant today than at any other time. In the context of the present situation, I strongly feel that there is an imperative need to recapture the spirit of the life and times of Gamji, who was assassinated 37 years ago by a young Ibo soldier Major Chukuma Kaduna Nzeogu, thus setting the stage for military rule in our dear country Nigeria and sowing the seed of ethnic hatred, political bitterness and tribalism which to this day are taking immeasurable toll on the nation. Nigerian doctors for kidney transplant training

The Federal Government will soon commence a comprehensive training of Nigerian medical doctors in the field of kidney transplant with a view to making the proposed kidney centers in eight teaching hospitals real centres of excellence.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Amina Ndalolo, confirmed this while receiving in audience a team of Sudanese government officials and medical experts who have been involved in kidney transplant at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

According to the minister, the very expensive nature of kidney disease treatment calls for more private sector involvement, especially in manpower development and equipment, as these would be difficult for only government to accomplish.

Dr. Ndalolo promised that the government would also look into ways of subsidising the cost of drugs for post-surgery care for kidney patients which is currently put at between N60,000 and N100,000 monthly.

She commended the sponsor of the renal transplant programme at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, a Nigerian-based Sudanese industrialist, Sheik Ibrahim El-Tayeb, for embarking on a worthy cause for which President Obasanjo has personally expressed appreciation and deep interest.

According to Dr. Ndalolo, the involvement of the Sudanese government in the programme was a pointer to the fact that African countries were deeply committed to the spirit of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in terms of co-operation for positive development.
